Dolphin tours in Key West: watching, not swimming, by season

Checked Departs Key West

Key West's dolphins are wild: you watch from a boat, 50 yards off, as NOAA asks. Which trips run all year, which only mid-October to April, and where the swims are.

On this page · 5 sections

The dolphins off Key West are wild bottlenose dolphins, and the way to see them is from a boat, at a distance, on a trip that runs in the right season. Three things decide which trip that is: whether you want to snorkel too, what month it is, and whether “swim with dolphins” is actually what you are after, because that is a different kind of place entirely.

Wild dolphins, and the rules around them

Watch from 50 yards. NOAA Fisheries’ guideline for wild dolphins is to observe them from “at least 50 yards (150 feet) by land or sea.” The agency’s other guidelines are the ones a good captain follows without being asked:

  • avoid circling or trapping dolphins between boats, or between a boat and the shore;
  • avoid sudden movements and loud noise around them;
  • move away carefully if they show signs of stress;
  • and do not touch or swim with them, “even if they approach you.”

Feeding them is illegal. Under the Marine Mammal Protection Act it is illegal to feed, or attempt to feed, a wild dolphin, or to harass one. NOAA says violators can face civil penalties of up to $36,498 and up to a year in prison. The Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary adds its own rules: no feeding marine life from a vessel, and no operating a boat in a way that injures marine mammals.

NOAA’s own policy puts it plainly:

“NOAA Fisheries does not support, condone, approve, or authorize activities that involve closely approaching, interacting, or attempting to interact with whales, dolphins, porpoises, seals, or sea lions in the wild.”

So an honest dolphin trip is a watching trip. The best ones are small, unhurried and happy to sit and wait at a distance.

Where the swim-with programs are

“Swim” is the first word search engines suggest after “Key West dolphin”. The swim programs are not wild-dolphin trips, and none of them is in Key West.

  • Dolphin Research Center is at 58901 Overseas Highway on Grassy Key, near Marathon, and has been a nonprofit since 1984. “Key West dolphin research center” is a common search, and the center is a long drive up the Keys.
  • Theater of the Sea, at Mile Marker 84.5 in Islamorada, farther up still, sells dolphin interactions alongside its shows.

Both work with dolphins in their care. If a swim is the point, that is where it happens; if seeing dolphins in the wild is the point, it is a boat from Key West.

Which trips run when

Dolphin watch and sunset sail, Honest Eco, on a sailing catamaranMid-October to April only3 hoursNo
Dolphin watch, guided snorkel and sandbar, Honest Eco, aboard SquidYear-round3.5 to 4 hoursYes
Dolphin watch and snorkel, Sunset WatersportsTwo trips a day, 11 a.m. and evening; times change with the season3 hoursYes

The one we list is the first: Honest Eco’s winter dolphin watch and sunset sail, a search for dolphins and then the sunset from a sailing catamaran, over three hours. It is $117.17 on the listing below, with free cancellation up to 24 hours before departure, and the operator says it leaves from the Key West Historic Seaport. It has no snorkeling, and it does not run from May to mid-October: in 2026–27 it sails from 15 October to 30 April, although Honest Eco’s home page still says November to April. It is the gentle one, and in winter it is also the one that puts you on the water at sunset.

The year-round alternative is a dolphin watch combined with snorkeling. Honest Eco’s version on Squid, a boat it had built for the trip, has run since 1986 and carries at most 16, with an average group of 11 by the operator’s own figures; it adds a guided snorkel of about an hour and a sandbar stop when the weather allows. Sunset Watersports runs a three-hour dolphin watch and snorkel for up to 40, with drinks on the way back. Neither is in our listings yet.

How likely you are to see them

Good odds. Honest Eco, which has watched Key West’s dolphins since 1986, says it knows 217 local bottlenose dolphins and spots them on more than 90% of its trips. The Fish and Wildlife Service’s calendar for the Keys refuges lists Atlantic bottlenose dolphins as present year-round, and Sunset Watersports says they are most active from spring to fall.

The rest is luck and weather, and on a windy day the captain changes the plan to suit the water.

Which to book

  • Mid-October to April, and you want the evening: the dolphin watch and sunset sail below. It combines two of the best things to do on the water here in one three-hour trip. Bring a layer.
  • May to mid-October, or you want to be in the water: a dolphin watch with snorkeling. The reef snorkel page has the sanctuary rules for swimmers.
  • Sunset is the point and dolphins a bonus: compare it with the other two boats on the sunset sail page.
  • You want a swim with a dolphin: that is a captive program up the Keys, and a day trip in itself.

On a winter evening the square is the free alternative: Mallory Square at sunset needs no booking.

NOAA Fisheries' guideline is to watch wild dolphins from at least 50 yards, about half a football field. Its guidelines also say not to circle them or trap them between boats or against the shore.
