Smathers is the beach Key West actually has: half a mile of sand on South Roosevelt Boulevard, the largest public beach on the island by the city’s own description, and the one most visitors end up at because it is the only one big enough to absorb everybody.
The arithmetic that decides your day
Parking is $5 an hour, with no daily cap.
That is the number that matters, because it inverts the obvious comparison. Fort Zachary Taylor charges $6 per vehicle plus a 50-cent Monroe County surcharge per person — $8 for a car of four — and that is the whole cost of the day. Smathers charges by the hour.
| A car of four | Smathers | Fort Zachary Taylor |
|---|---|---|
| Two hours | $10 | $8 |
| Four hours | $20 | $8 |
| A full beach day | $40+ | $8 |
So the honest rule is: a swim at Smathers, a day at Fort Zach. If you are walking or cycling from Old Town, Smathers is free and Fort Zach is $2.50 each.
Enforcement runs Monday to Saturday, 8 a.m. to midnight and Sunday from noon to midnight. Sunday morning is therefore the one genuinely free window in the week, and the beach opens at sunrise.
What is actually there
The city lists volleyball nets, restrooms and shower facilities. That is the list. It does not list a concession, rentals, or a lifeguard.
The restrooms keep their own hours — 7 a.m. to 6.30 p.m. — which is narrower than the beach at both ends. Sunrise swimmers and sunset stayers are on their own.
What it is like
Calm, shallow, sandy underfoot. After Fort Zachary Taylor’s broken coral this is a relief, and it is why Smathers is the better of the two for small children and for anyone who forgot water shoes.
It is also a roadside beach. Four lanes of South Roosevelt run directly behind the sand, and Key West International’s runway is immediately across the road, so the soundtrack is traffic and turboprops rather than surf. That is not a complaint people make in reviews, and it is the first thing you notice.
For snorkeling, go elsewhere — and by elsewhere we mean offshore. The bottom here is sand and the water is clear and empty. The reef that Key West is actually known for is several miles out and takes a boat: the reef snorkel trip and the sanctuary’s rules are here.
When to come
Early. The parking clock starts at 8 a.m. Monday to Saturday, the beach opens at sunrise, and the hour in between is the best one of the day: the light is low, the boulevard is quiet, and the meter is not running.
